Our tools and platforms
An overview of the tools and platforms we use to work, and all the important links needed to collaborate with the broader team.
Zoom
What is it? Zoom is a video conferencing app. It's great to hold meetings, have presentations, or hold events online--even with very large groups.
What do we use it for? Zoom is where we hold all of our digital meetings--video calls, presentations, work sessions, etc.
Why did we pick this one? Zoom is the best solution when it comes to smooth voice and video conference calls. It's a lot more stable than alternatives like Google Meet.
How do I start using it? You can download Zoom here. And you can find information about our meetings on Zoom here.
Who is the maintainer if I have questions? Erik
Twist
What is it? Twist is a communication platform allowing chat and file exchange .
What do we use it for? Twist is our main communication platform. This is where we exchange about our current work, where we share resources, or brainstorm how to best address some of the situations we're facing.
Why did we pick this one? We picked Twist over alternatives like Slack or Discord because it's a lot more organized and less overwhelming. It's also independent rather than owned by venture capitalists or hedge funds.
How do I start using it? You can join KCR's Twist here. After joining, you can download Twist for desktop or mobile here but if you'd rather not download a new app, you can just continue logging from a web browser. If you don't have access, contact the maintainer to get an invite. Once you are logged in, you can join any channel you'd like (there is one channel per team). You can learn how to use Twist here.

Loomio
What is it? Loomio is a decision-making platform for remote and distributed groups.
What do we use it for? Loomio is the main place where we vote and make decisions. We hold our discussions during our weekly meetings or on Twist, and when we feel like we're ready for a vote, or that we want to get a sense of everyone's feelings on the issue at hand, we put up a proposal on Loomio for voting.
Why did we pick this one? Loomio was specifically designed for distributed groups that don't work together in an office, and built to allow teams to make decisions in a participatory way. Loomio is also developed by a worker co-op, committed to movements and social justice, and open-source.
How do I start using it? You can log in KCR's Loomio here. If you don't have access, contact the maintainer to get an invite. Once you are logged in, you can have a look at the polls here. .join any channel you'd like (there is one channel per team). You can learn how to use Loomio here.

Gitbook
What is it? Gitbook is a platform to host documentation and knowledge bases.
What do we use it for? GitBook is where we draft and publish the Handbook you're reading at this very moment!
Why did we pick this one? It's easy to use and looks good--and it's free for community projects!
How do I start using it? You can navigate all the pages in the handbook, and contact the maintainer if see a typo or something to change.

Protonmail
What is it? Protonmail is a secure email provider.
What do we use it for? Our email address ktownresponse@protonmail.com is where potential new members, potential partners, and the public can reach us.
Why did we pick this one? Protonmail is open-source and private. Any email sent from another Protonmail address is end-to-end encrypted, so it cannot be read by anyone other than the sender and the recipient(s).
